Abuse and violence are real issues that impact the health of individuals and communities. Anyone can be affected by violence — regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning and Two Spirit (LGBTQ2S+) people experience higher rates of violence than people who identify as straight or heterosexual. 50% of bisexual women have been raped in their lifetime, compared to 1 in 6 heterosexual women who have been raped in their lifetime. 64% of transgender individuals have experienced sexual assault in their lifetime. Discrimination
Discrimination is considered the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age or sexual orientation. This can have a very large impact on the mental health and well being of people.
Racism
Racism is a form of prejudice that assumes that the members of racial categories have distinctive characteristics and that these differences result in some racial groups being inferior to others. For more visit the APA website. Racism is real! Many of us carry biases that we learn from media (think movies, TV shows, and music) and social norms.
